Perpignan France

The capital of Roussillon, part of Catalonia annexed by Louis XIII in 1641, in many ways still feels as much Spanish as French. Located on the foothills of the Pyrenees, Perpignan is known for its vineyards and its delicious fruits and vegetables, the main reasons for its economic growth. Spanish influence persists here and the city has a distinctly multicultural character. Historically, Perpignan was capital of the kingdom of Mallorca, and it retains its royal past. A prove of that is the beautiful palace of the kings of Mallorca, a majestic Gothic style building. The old town, with its warren of alleys and decaying buildings colored in shades of lemon, peach and tangerine, houses Saint-Jean Cathedral, which construction started in 1324 and lasted more than 200 years. The temple has rich altarpieces and under the organ case a passageway provides access to the Romanesque chapel of Notre - Dame- dels - Correchs where numerous relics are preserved. Behind Saint –Jacques church, at the top of the city walls, we find La Miranda, one of the most popular parks of the city, with a distinctly Mediterranean flora. The city has three faces: the lively Old Town with its Spanish roots, the ancient capital of the kingdom of Mallorca and the multicultural district of Saint –Jacques, which features a large choice of cafes and restaurants. People here are enormously friendly and the countryside is perfect for leisure exploration, which makes Perpignan a popular tourist destination.
